Do Not Set Your Goals For Next Year Until You Read This

It’s that time of year when everyone is telling you how great next year is going to be for them and they already have a list of new years resolutions and goals for the upcoming year.

The fact is the majority don’t achieve them and here is one of the reasons why I believe that is the case:

They don’t reflect on this year.

Setting goals is a bit like building a house.

There is a process in which key parts of the project have to be carried out in a particular order and if this isn’t done it can be hugely detrimental over time i.e. if you just started to lay bricks without a foundation chances are house will not last very long.

Over the last 5 years I have developed a process in which I review the passing year and then use that as my foundation to build on in the following year.

I wanted to share it with you.

It’s hugely satisfying and quite over whelming to go back and remember all you have achieved, accomplished, enjoyed and been disappointed by.

Ask your self the following questions in this order and try to be as detailed as possible. To give you an idea I do this and it takes me somewhere between 4-6 hours to complete in full.

What did I accomplish this year?

What were my biggest disappointments?

What did I learn?

How did I/do I limit myself and how can I stop?

What are my top personal values/needs?

Once you have this you can then start to plan your goals for the future. I recommend that you start with ultimate goals and work backwards, I find it’s easier.

I like to create SMART PP goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable (is it humanly possible), Realistic (Is it within my current means, be careful not to get that mixed up with within current mindset) and Time framed, Positively phrased and in the Present tense.

Consider all of these areas when you are setting your goals: Career, Finances, Personal development, Health, Family, Relationship (partner), Social Life, Attitude, Other.

What are my ultimate goals?

What are my 5 year goals?

What are my 3 year goals?

What are my 2017 (or following year) goals?

What are my 90 day goals?

What are my January goals?

What are my 7 day goals?

As you can see this is quite a lengthy process but as Abraham Lincoln once said “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

So do yourself, your friends, family and loved ones a favour and spend a bit of time sharpening your axe.
